Editing Matter Details

This guide explains how to update information for an existing matter.

When to Edit Matter Details

You might need to edit matter details when:

  • You receive more information about the matter (e.g., settlement date confirmed)
  • Something was entered incorrectly
  • Contact details change
  • You need to add purchaser/vendor information

Opening the Editor

There are three ways to edit matter details:

  • Click the Edit Matter Details button on the home screen
  • Use the keyboard shortcut Cmd + Shift + E
  • Go to File > Edit Matter Details in the menu bar

Step 1: Select the Matter Folder

  1. Click Choose Folder
  2. Navigate to the matter folder you want to edit
  3. Click Open

The current matter details will be loaded and displayed.

Step 2: Update the Information

The editor shows all the fields for this matter type, organised into sections:

  • Matter Details - Matter number, type, people acting
  • Client Information - Name, contact details, address
  • Property Details - Address, title reference, council
  • Transaction Details - Price, dates, settlement info
  • And more, depending on the matter type...

Making Changes

  • Click on any field to edit it
  • Use the date picker for date fields
  • Toggle switches for Yes/No fields
  • Select from dropdowns where provided

Collapsed Sections

Some sections (like Agent Details or Finance) may be collapsed by default. Click the section header to expand it.

Step 3: Save Your Changes

When you're done editing:

  1. Review your changes
  2. Click Save

The matter file (matter.json) will be updated with your changes.

What Gets Updated

When you save:

  • The matter.json file in the matter folder is updated
  • The "last modified" date is recorded
  • All future document generation will use the new information

Existing Documents

Editing matter details does not update documents you've already generated. You'll need to regenerate any documents that should reflect the new information.

Tips

Can't Find a Field?

If you need to store information that doesn't have a field:

  • Check if there's a collapsed section that contains it
  • The available fields are defined in the template's matter.json
  • Contact your administrator to add new fields to the template

Bulk Updates

If you need to update the same information across many matters (e.g., your firm's address changed), you'll need to edit each matter individually, or contact your administrator about bulk update options.

After Editing

Once you've saved your changes, you can:

  • Generate documents with the updated information
  • Close the editor and return to the home screen
